This sake cup, or guinomi, is shaped in a classical style from the Edo period called Tenkai (which roughly translates to “open sky”). This shape, which widens at the brim, is meant to make the cup easier to drink from. The bottom of the cup is engraved with a chrysanthemum that seems to float when the cup is filled with sake. The design on the outside changes noticeably as the cup fills and empties. There are various colors to choose from, each suitable for everyday use. This design is ideal for adding a special something to your usual “kanpai” (drinking toast).
