This tie is named Gozan no Okuribi (literally “five mountains sending off fire”) after the scene it depicts of Kyoto’s second largest festival, in which bonfires are lit on five mountains surrounding the city. The tie shows the festival’s biggest and most famous bonfire Daimonji (with the fire shaped in the Japanese character to mean “large” or “great”) on the Higashiyama Nyoigatake mountains, as well as the Hidari Daimonji bonfire (also the character meaning “large”) on Mount Daihokusan, the Myō/Hō bonfire (in the characters meaning “wondrous dharma”) on Matsugasaki Nishiyama and Higashiyama mountains, the Funagata bonfire (in the shape of a boat) on Mount Nishigamo Funayama, and finally Toriigata (in the shape of a shrine gate) on Mount Toriimoto, Mandarasan. This portrayal of Kyoto being lit up with bonfires in the night makes this a dynamic, dapper tie and also a perfect gift.
